Disagio tecnologico e metodo umano / Technological discomfort and human method

(English version)

It’s easy to become passionate about the technological debate, focusing on its geostrategic implications, on the opportunities and risks brought by turbo-technological times. But there is a theme, still hidden, that is well worth highlighting and on which we must work by plunging our attention into the depths of the human.

Relentless technological advancement transforms us anthropologically and risks fuelling a separation between different humanities: minorities involved in designing the technological frontiers and in the discussions that follow from them; majorities of tool users with little or no critical sense; many others who exclude themselves from a historical process so fast and so radical that it leads them to say they can’t manage it, that they are unable to be part of it, or that they don’t want to be.

Working on this aspect of the problem means introducing a paradigm that does not exist in the debate. It takes a human method: if limits must be placed on the technological race (what pertains to governance), the dimension that cannot be overlooked is the ongoing exclusion of entire segments of the population from the ‘spirit of the times’.

While the youngest are part of the turbo-technological process, others are left behind, or shut out. We must confront, mitigating it as much as possible, what could be called technological ‘discomfort’ — that finding oneself a stranger to progress on the part of mature generations who are unaccustomed, by age and by culture, to the systemic acceleration we are being swept up in.

We should also ask ourselves, with an eye to the sustainability of our human communities, whether this acceleration has not come about in too short a time, failing to guarantee the majority the time to grow accustomed to the metamorphosis under way. We believe this is a central theme, because the cohesion of societies is a decisive element in the process of evolution, preventing involution from prevailing.

Exasperated acceleration, which turns into unsustainable competition, is a problem for the youngest too, often overwhelmed by a hyper-activity that is something other than ‘working a great deal’. It is letting oneself be conquered by the goal, sacrificing the sense and meaning of one’s own humanity, being swept away by the swollen river of increasingly uncontrollable dynamics.

Today more than ever, the anthropological question is decisive. This writer believes that, primarily, we must make room for a more human way of thinking, sharing — at the height of the metamorphosis we are living through (a passage between eras) — a project of reflection on the complexity of who we are becoming.

Without presumption, we believe it is necessary to develop, within the human condition, a philosophy of history adequate to the times. When evolution takes on dogmatic, religiously debased tones, the dangerous rift is realised between the few elect and the many excluded or self-excluded. Realistically, it is no longer enough to invoke ethics or to use rhetorical expressions such as ‘putting the human being back at the centre’: the time has come for a different, and creative, work of reappropriating the common good.
