Il metodo umano, oltre la mentalità totalitaria / The human method, beyond the totalitarian mindset

(English version)

We are the human method — not a superstructure of the human, but essence, depth, nature.

The method is us, walking, and the path is made by walking. Here we intend to bring a historical urgency: the world in metamorphosis, and dismantled, needs to reconnect what is scattered, recovering a tension toward an integrated and dynamic unity. Every part of the whole belongs to us, even if the whole is unreachable, embracing us and at the same time surpassing us.

The human path is always within uncertainty, doubt, error — questioning a contradictory history because it depends on us. And yet, today more than ever, it is precisely in the passage between eras that we witness the accumulation of totalizing certainties, with a totalitarian flavour. Let it be clear: we do not think the tragic totalitarian experiences of the ‘900 laboratory’ can recur; our concern, rather, is with what is creeping, with the clash between presumed truths competing with one another. And, again, we humans do not stop waging crusades, today in onlife mode, using God.

The concern mentioned above makes us say that the human method, to be such, cannot but be anti-totalitarian. There are many cases in which the invocation of divine certainties — a kind of religion of certainty — generates monsters, banal evil. How can we fail to see that, also via onlife, the drive is to radicalize and close off identities, to exacerbate the idea of borders, to want to erase peoples and cultures from the human-planetary mosaic, to disinform and threaten in a hybrid manner, to gather consent founded on fear, on the exaltation of security, and on competition as a race toward a final victory?

Investing in the human method means acknowledging that our thought must be reconnected within the complexity of the real, and contributing to the formation of ruling classes that do not limit themselves, as happens, to feeding a fragile and vicious theatre of opposition in the imminent present. The issue is the governance of the beyond, which already runs through our daily life, reasoning in terms of the common good (from the territorial level up to that of global challenges).

Investing in the human method means progressively leaving behind what is still totalitarian within us, well aware that we are imperfect. ‘Magnifica humanitas’ deserves a surge of responsibility: the work is long, patient, deep, and indispensable.
