UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warns AI could amplify systemic racism

Artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies are already reproducing human biases and could wrosen systemic racism, warned UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

‘If we are not careful, they could deepen systemic racism against Africans and people of African descent’, Türk said in a keynote speech to the High-Level Dialogue on Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent in Geneva on 8 October. Türk noted that the OHCHR has been ‘very vocal’ on the issue and placed it alongside other forms of discrimination, including in policing, criminal justice and access to health and education. He highlighted AI bias as one of the ways existing discrimination could be reinforced.
