Qaani’s visit to Iraq focused on preventing clashes with security forces

IRGC Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani visited Iraq in a bid to prevent clashes between Tehran-backed militias and Iraqi security forces, according to sources cited by Al Arabiya English. During the trip, he reportedly met leaders of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), other armed factions, and figures from the Coordination Framework, the Shiite political alliance backing the government. The discussions also focused on bringing weapons under Iraqi state control. The report notes that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has set September 30 as the deadline for armed factions to hand over their weapons, while the ruling coalition has warned that illegal arms possession after that date would be handled under the country’s Counter-Terrorism Law.
