(Joan Cho – East Asia Forum) Former South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his attempted insurrection, a ruling that marks a significant affirmation of South Korea’s democratic institutions. But deep political polarisation and chronically low public trust in the judiciary mean the verdict alone is unlikely to restore democratic legitimacy or resolve the institutional distrust that predated and outlasted the crisis. South Korea’s long history of presidential pardons for political figures further clouds the sentence’s deterrent effect and raises questions about whether judicial accountability will endure.
