Urges for international rules on Military use of AI mount at international forums over the last 2 weeks

As military applications of AI accelerate amid growing geopolitical tensions and pressure on multilateral arms-control frameworks, questions of human oversight, accountability and international regulation are gaining renewed prominence over international forums.

At the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, 5 to 9 October 2026, South Africa has called for a legally binding international instrument to regulate the military use of artificial intelligence (AI), arguing that safeguards and meaningful human control must keep pace with the growing role of AI-enabled systems in warfare.
