Oltre che in metamorfosi, il mondo è in continua escalation. E l’escalation si sposa pericolosamente con l’esclusione di buona parte dell’umanità dal comprendere, e dal poter contribuire a governare, i processi storici: che si parli di guerre (cinetiche o ‘sotto soglia’) o di intelligenza artificiale, ben poco importa.
Oggi più che mai, essere dalla parte giusta della storia significa coinvolgersi in una presa di coscienza e di consapevolezza sul fatto che ciò che accade ha superato il limite del sostenibile. Il mix tra guerra mondiale ‘a pezzi’, policrisi e accelerazione tecnologica è tra noi e, potremmo dire, in noi. Si è aperta una grande questione antropologica e la domanda è: chi stiamo diventando ? E ancora: cosa sta diventando il mondo ?
Se è difficile rendersi conto di ciò che accade mentre lo si vive, è altrettanto necessario. Da decenni, ormai, la complessità dei processi storici sta crescendo: metamorfosi è cambio di stato, passaggio di era. Siamo dentro un mondo smontato, che ha smarrito la direzione strategica, leggasi la capacità di orientarsi nel senso della costruzione del bene comune. C’è crisi di governance e di leadership ma, prima di tutto, c’è crisi di senso e di significato umano.
L’escalation non sembra fermarsi. Come nel caso dell’orologio rotto, che segna l’ora giusta due volte al giorno, tutti hanno una parte di ragione: tutti cercano, con più o meno volgarità, di portare a casa un risultato per essere ‘first’ e le mediazioni che si definiscono hanno piuttosto il sapore di compromessi: ma non basta. La partita strategica è ben più ampia.
Il tema è l’orizzonte visionario, ricongiungere ciò che è disperso, interrogarci su cosa diventi la condizione umano-planetaria. Qualcuno potrà obiettare: ancora riflessione ? serve pragmatismo. Le due cose, in quanto profondamente interrelate, non sono separabili. Serve un metodo umano (oggetto della nostra ricerca) che tenga insieme tutte le dimensioni del convivere, ben considerando le grandi opportunità che ci vengono offerte dall’accelerazione tecnologica e gli altrettanti rischi e minacce che ne derivano. Entrambi sono ben visibili agli occhi di chi voglia vedere.
Mentre i più ‘subiscono’ un dibattito sempre più competitivo e mediocre sui grandi temi del tempo che viviamo, gli assenti sono la direzione strategica e il limite operativo. Il punto è sensibile perché chiama in causa ciò che ancora non c’è: una visione nell’oltre. Ma l’oltre è già qui.
Le analisi su ciò che accade tendono ancora a linearità e settorialità mentre il mondo procede in chiave ostinatamente contraria. Se la realtà ci mostra la profonda interrelazione delle sfide, anche le migliori ‘fotografie’ che si limitano a evidenziare la trasformazione dei rapporti di potere non si calano oltre la superficie, non toccano i nervi scoperti (non da oggi) nella evoluzione umano-planetaria. E’ tale evoluzione, che porta dentro la sua involuzione, a dover costituire i punti di un’agenda nuova, che ponga in metamorfosi il nostro passo di soggetti di storia e non di soggetti alla storia.
Molte questioni sono antichissime, come la logica di dominio, e la vediamo ripetersi in ogni epoca storica cambiando i protagonisti. Il tema non è cancellare il dominio, sarebbe irrealistico e ingenuo, ma lavorare – in coscienza e ragione – a rinnovate mediazioni per immaginare scenari di sostenibilità sistemica, a partire dalle nostre vite quotidiane.

Beyond being in a state of metamorphosis, the world is undergoing constant escalation. And escalation is dangerously intertwined with the exclusion of much of humanity from understanding – and being able to help govern – historical processes, whether we are talking about wars, kinetic or “below the threshold,” or artificial intelligence. It makes little difference.
Today more than ever, being on the right side of history means engaging in a process of awakening and becoming aware that what is happening has gone beyond the limits of sustainability. The combination of a “piecemeal” world war, polycrisis, and technological acceleration is among us and, one might say, within us. A major anthropological question has emerged: who are we becoming? And, furthermore, what is the world becoming?
Although it is difficult to grasp what is happening while living through it, doing so is equally necessary. For decades now, the complexity of historical processes has been increasing: metamorphosis means a change of state, the transition from one era to another. We are living in a dismantled world that has lost its strategic direction – that is, its capacity to orient itself toward building the common good. There is a crisis of governance and leadership, but first and foremost there is a crisis of purpose and human meaning.
The escalation shows no sign of stopping. As with a broken clock that tells the right time twice a day, everyone is partly right: everyone seeks, with varying degrees of crudeness, to achieve a result and come out “first,” while the forms of mediation that emerge feel more like compromises. But that is not enough. The strategic stakes are far broader.
The issue is one of a visionary horizon: reconnecting what has been scattered and asking ourselves what the human-planetary condition is becoming. Some may object: more reflection? What we need is pragmatism. But the two cannot be separated, because they are deeply interconnected. We need a human method – the subject of our research – capable of holding together every dimension of coexistence while fully considering both the great opportunities offered by technological acceleration and the equally significant risks and threats it entails. Both are clearly visible to anyone willing to see.
While most people are subjected to an increasingly competitive and mediocre debate about the major issues of our time, what is missing is strategic direction and an operational sense of limits. This is a sensitive point because it calls into question something that does not yet exist: a vision of what lies beyond. And yet, the beyond is already here.
Analyses of current events still tend to be linear and sector-specific, while the world stubbornly moves in the opposite direction. If reality reveals the profound interconnectedness of its challenges, even the best “snapshots” that merely highlight shifts in power relations fail to penetrate beneath the surface. They do not touch the raw nerves – which are hardly new – of human-planetary evolution. It is this evolution, which carries its own involution within it, that must provide the key points of a new agenda: one capable of transforming our role so that we become agents of history rather than subjects of history.
Many of these issues are ancient, including the logic of domination, which we see recurring in every historical era with different protagonists. The aim is not to eliminate domination – that would be unrealistic and naive – but to work, with conscience and reason, toward renewed forms of mediation, imagining scenarios of systemic sustainability that begin with our everyday lives.
