AFP reports that Colombia’s new hard-right president, Abelardo de la Espriella, has recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, making Colombia the second country after the United States to do so. His government said Israel’s control of the territory is essential for its self-defense, while the UN continues to regard the Golan Heights as Syrian territory under Israeli occupation. The move marks a sharp break from former president Gustavo Petro, who had cut ties with Israel over Gaza and stopped Israeli arms imports.
