Southeast Asia’s Grok bans were too little, too late

(Nuurrianti Jalli – East Asia Forum) In early 2026, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines temporarily banned Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot after it generated millions of sexually explicit deepfakes — including images of children — exposing a critical gap in Southeast Asian AI regulation that operates only after harm has already spread. Vietnam’s binding AI statute and Singapore’s agentic AI governance framework offer more targeted approaches to the production and decision-rights layers.
