Taiwan’s drone ambitions outpace its capabilities

Taiwan has committed to asymmetric defence as a national priority, but its progress in developing drone capabilities has been uneven. Its procurement targets remain modest compared with Ukraine’s production, while supply chain vulnerabilities, expensive US systems and domestic procurement controversies pose additional challenges. Taiwan needs more drones as well as the doctrine, command-and-control integration, interoperability and training required to deploy them effectively.
