The focus is on what these systems can do, how quickly they can be deployed, and where they can drive efficiency. But there is a more important question that often gets overlooked: Just because we can, does that mean we should? From a security perspective, agentic AI is not just another step in automation. It represents a more fundamental shift. It is the introduction of non-human actors into systems that have been designed around human accountability. That distinction matters. In traditional enterprise environments, every action can be traced back to a person. Individuals have identities, permissions, and clear audit trails. Decisions are made, reviewed, and, where necessary, challenged. Agentic systems change that dynamic. They can observe, interpret, and act. While the benefits are clear — particularly in areas such as monitoring, analysis, and repetitive task execution — the moment these systems move beyond observation into action, a new category of risk emerges. The challenge is not capability. It is accountability. Unlike traditional automation, agentic systems are not simply executing predefined instructions. They are interpreting context, making decisions, and acting within environments that were designed around human accountability. That shifts the nature of risk. It is no longer just about whether a system works as intended. It is about whether the decisions being made are appropriate and whether those decisions can be understood, traced, and owned.
