Melting glaciers drove ‘21% of sea level rise’ over past two decades (WEF)

Science Journalist, Carbon Brief
  • Glacier melt across the world has accelerated over the past two decades, according to a new study.
  • It found that meltwater accounted for 21% of global sea level rise over the same period.
  • Glaciers are losing more mass than the Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets with annual rates of glacier thinning ‘nearly doubled’ from 2000 to 2019.
  • Around 10% of the world’s land surface is currently covered by glaciers, which store around 70% of the Earth’s freshwater.
  • Authors of the study warn that melting glaciers are a significant contributor to rising sea levels.
