Richiamare il ruolo di noi intellettuali significa considerare la complessità di ciò che accade. L’intellettuale non può avere un approccio semplicistico ma profondo.
La tentazione di semplificare genera auto-inganni. Perché la Politica è qualcosa di profondamente diverso dagli umori di piazza che, da qualunque parte li si considerino, mai aiutano a risolvere le situazioni e a cambiare via. Altra cosa è la maturazione di un senso di pace, di giustizia e di sicurezza che passa anche, e doverosamente, dalla presa d’atto delle insopportabili e inaccettabili tragedie che vediamo scorrere ogni giorno davanti ai nostri occhi.
Siamo all’apice di un pensiero lineare che non fa altro che aggravare la condizione di una umanità e di un pianeta che fanno esperienza di una evidente insostenibilità sistemica. Per prima cosa, dunque, gli intellettuali hanno la responsabilità di scegliere il non troppo comodo, ma ben più realistico, pensiero complesso. C’è un problema culturale di fondo: dentro la grande trasformazione, il pensiero non può più essere lineare. Per corrispondere alla realtà, tentando di comprenderla per governarla, il pensiero deve calarsi nelle infinite dinamiche interrelate.
Le classi dirigenti, di bulli al servizio del solo interesse nazionale, percorrono il futuro con la testa rivolta all’indietro. Oggi sono saltati tutti i paradigmi che conoscevamo. Addirittura, anche i limiti etici della guerra sono un ricordo del passato: lo raccontano, tragicamente, gli esseri umani uccisi mentre aspettano di potersi nutrire.
C’è bisogno di intellettuali che incarnino una nuova cultura dell’umanità e del pianeta, nuove mediazioni, nuove visioni. Se non bastano più gli appelli morali, l’uomo resta il protagonista del proprio destino, non algoritmico ma del tutto umano. Chiamare alla responsabilità del pensiero, che è già azione, è l’unico modo di onorare la memoria di chi, senza nome, è stato ucciso dal male banale.

Recalling the role of intellectuals means considering the complexity of what is happening. Intellectuals cannot take a simplistic approach, but must instead adopt a profound one.
The temptation to simplify leads to self-deception. Politics is something profoundly different from the mood of the streets, which, whichever way you look at it, never helps to resolve situations or bring about change.
Another thing is the maturation of a sense of peace, justice and security, which also, and necessarily, involves acknowledging the unbearable and unacceptable tragedies that we see unfolding before our eyes every day. We are at the height of a linear way of thinking that only serves to aggravate the condition of humanity and the planet, which are experiencing obvious systemic unsustainability.
First and foremost, therefore, intellectuals have a responsibility to choose the less comfortable but far more realistic option of complex thinking. There is a fundamental cultural problem: within the great transformation, thinking can no longer be linear. In order to correspond to reality, to attempt to understand it in order to govern it, thinking must immerse itself in infinite interrelated dynamics.
The ruling classes, bullies serving only national interests, are heading into the future with their heads turned backwards. Today, all the paradigms we knew have been overturned. Even the ethical limits of war are a thing of the past: this is tragically illustrated by the human beings killed while waiting to feed themselves.
We need intellectuals who embody a new culture of humanity and the planet, new mediations, new visions. If moral appeals are no longer enough, man remains the protagonist of his own destiny, not algorithmic but entirely human. Calling for responsibility of thought, which is already action, is the only way to honour the memory of those who, nameless, have been killed by banal evil.
