Peter Albrecht and Marie Ladekjær Gravesen (Danish Institute for International Affairs) write that as global attention has focused on environmental issues, as well as on Africa’s rich renewable energy sources and valuable minerals, the nature of conflicts over land and resources has changed. The authors, in a research paper, elaborate on three points: global investments in renewable energy sources, together with the technology industry’s demand for valuable minerals, are causing casualties and conflicts; the growing demand for nature conservation increases the potential for conflict over control of essential resources and land; areas such as drylands are considered sites for renewable energy initiatives, such as wind farms, and are becoming new battlegrounds for control
