RFE RL (U.S. Orders Dependents Of Embassy Staff In Kyiv To Leave Ukraine).
Global Times (Chinese embassy debunks US media report claiming Beijing requested Moscow not to invade Ukraine during Winter Olympics: TASS)
RFE RL: Amid a Russian military buildup, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has called on the United States and Europe to treat Ukraine as part of the West that will never again be dominated by Moscow. Russia’s buildup near Ukraine’s borders has spawned mounting concerns that an invasion may be imminent, prompting a flurry of diplomacy against the backdrop of the drumbeats of war in Europe. Chia Siow Yue per East Asia Forum: After a roller-coaster year, Singapore enters 2022 with its economy, government and society all proving resilient. Singapore managed the impacts of external pressures on its globalised economy, absorbed the impact of COVID-19 and navigated domestic political change. But as ageing leaders and voters pass the baton to the next generation, upheaval may be inevitable. (Generational change in Singapore’s politics).

Riflessioni sui rapporti tra USA e Cina. Jia Qingguo per East Asia Forum: As the poet Shelley once hopefully wrote, ‘if winter comes, can spring be far behind?’ When it comes to China–US relations now, it seems that spring is quite far behind. At the beginning of 2021, there were modest hopes. The good news was that Joe Biden had won the US presidential election. Trump’s trade war had sent the relationship into a deep dive. His manipulation of the China question for domestic political gain contributed to its further deterioration. His handling of the Taiwan issue towards the end of his term increased the risk of accidental conflict across the Taiwan Strait. (Waiting for spring to come in China–US relations)
Vertice Australia-UK e l’impegno di UK nell’Indo-Pacifico. Peter Jennings per The Strategist: The immediate significance of Friday’s AUKMIN gathering in Sydney was that it took place while a Russian military assault on Ukraine is imminent. Given the threat from Moscow, no one would have been surprised had the UK foreign and defence secretaries delayed their visit. Foreign Minister Marise Payne told the post-dialogue media conference she had observed an exponential and continued upward commitment of UK engagement in the Indo-Pacific. UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said ‘we are facing global challenges from multiple aggressors’. (AUKMIN’s global view is good for Australia)
Mercedes Page per The Interpreter: After meeting Australian counterparts in the morning, Britain’s Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss delivered an address to the Lowy Institute on Friday which outlined how the United Kingdom will work with partners to build a global “Network of Liberty” to stand up for freedom and push back against increasing threats to international security. Truss first outlined the Network of Liberty concept in a major foreign policy speech to Chatham House back in December. Coming off the back of the UK’s Integrated Review in 2021 and Truss assuming the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development portfolio in September, the Network of Liberty outlined a new agenda and vision for UK foreign policy – one focussed on commercial opportunity and creating economic, trade and security relationships in the pursuit of freedom and liberty. (The D10 is dead, long live the … Network of Liberty?)
Michael Leach per The Interpreter: After two years marked by Covid-19 and floods, Timor-Leste is now gearing up for presidential elections on 19 March. A runoff round for the top two candidates will be held on 19 April if no candidate receives a majority. Presidential candidates run formally as independents, but commonly receive the backing of political parties. The candidates backed by the two largest parties are now clear. Former President Jose Ramos-Horta confirmed on Sunday he will run again in 2022, receiving the powerful backing of Xanana Gusmão’s CNRT. This came a week after the incumbent President, Fretilin’s Francisco “Lu Olo” Guterres, declared his candidacy. Complicating matters, however, the current head of the defence force, General Lere Anan Timur, is also seeking Fretilin’s support. (Timor-Leste: comebacks and contests ahead of presidential elections)
Huynh Tam Sang per The Interpreter: Tensions with China over the South China Sea have prompted Indonesia to invite maritime security officials from five ASEAN member states – Brunei, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam – to meet in February to discuss a possible joint response to Beijing’s growing assertiveness. Jakarta’s bold move is worth consideration as Indonesia is a non-claimant state in the disputed sea and has kept studious silence to avoid diplomatic conflict with China. However, as de facto leader of ASEAN, Indonesia has been persistently challenged by China’s aggressive moves. Over the past two years, the two countries have reciprocally summoned their envoys to “lodge protests over the activities in Natuna waters” – a region contested by both Indonesia and China. (Could minilateralism work in the South China Sea?)
Hirak Jyoti Das per Vivekananda International Foundation: The Houthi attack using ballistic missiles and drones at an oil refinery in Abu Dhabi’s Musaffah Industrial City that killed two Indians and one Pakistani national on 17 January 2022 has drawn attention to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)’s role in the Yemen conflict. The commentary seeks to identify the reasons for Houthis’ direct confrontation with the UAE and analyse its ramifications on the continuing war in Yemen. (Houthi Strike at Abu Dhabi)
Al Jazeera: The United Arab Emirates says it intercepted and destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles that were targeting the country, and there were no casualties. “The remnants of the intercepted ballistic missiles fell in separate areas around Abu Dhabi,” the defence ministry said in a statement on the state-run WAM news agency on Monday. (UAE says intercepted and destroyed Houthi missiles)
Al Jazeera: The United States is unlikely to strike a deal with Iran to save the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement unless Tehran releases four US citizens Washington says it is holding hostage, the lead US nuclear negotiator told the Reuters news agency on Sunday. US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley repeated the long-held US position that the issue of the four people held in Iran is separate from the nuclear negotiations. He moved a step closer, however, to saying that their release was a precondition for a nuclear agreement. (Nuclear deal unlikely unless Iran releases US prisoners: Report)
