China added a total of 11.86 million new jobs in 2020, significantly higher than the original target of 9 million. China’s urban unemployment rate was 5.2 percent in December, unchanged from the same period last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.
The NBS also confirmed China’s overall urban unemployment rate in 2020 registered at 5.6 percent, below the previous forecast of 6 percent.
The number of migrant workers dropped 1.8 percent in 2020 to 285.6 million. Meanwhile, the average monthly salary for migrant workers increased 2.8 percent to 4,072 yuan ($627.9).

Chinese residents’ per capita disposable income in 2020 was 32,189 yuan, doubling 2010’s total. According to the NBS, this growth was generally in line with the general economic growth in China. The disposable income of urban residents increased 3.5 percent in nominal terms to 43,834 yuan; for rural residents, disposable income also went up 6.9 percent compared to the previous year, hitting 17,131 yuan.
The per capita disposable income of the top income group reached 80,294 yuan, while for the lowest income group, the disposable income registered 7,869 yuan, the NBS said.
