For India, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has an important role to play in leveraging the geostrategic location of the North East Region (NER) to stimulate cross-border integration. The NER is routinely seen as a potential springboard for India’s ‘Act East’ policy, and for increased collaborations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, given the vast number of regional connectivity projects and substantial investments in sectors like trade, tourism, technology, and energy. This report examines the status of transport and communication connectivity between the NER and the BIMSTEC countries.
