The new IPCC Sixth Assessment Report clearly states that the coming decades are the planet’s last chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C before the end of the 21st century. It underlined the need for economies to decarbonise (i.e., to undertake deep reductions in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions) to save the planet from the manifold consequences of climate change. Indeed, commitments to decarbonisation or clean energy transition have been gaining ground, especially over the past year. Nearly 130 countries, responsible for 73 percent of global GHG emissions, have either announced net zero targets or are considering them. If such goals are achieved in full, global warming could be limited to 2oC by the end of the century.
