On 19 February 2021, Malaysia’s Federal Court found respected news outlet Malaysiakini guilty of contempt of court for five comments by readers deemed critical of the country’s judiciary. In its majority judgment, the panel ordered the company to pay a fine of RM500,000 (US$124,000) — over double the amount sought by prosecutors — yet found editor-in-chief Steven Gan not guilty.
