The United States warned on Saturday that the security environment in the Middle East remains “complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.”
The State Department called on its citizens currently in the region to exercise vigilance and be aware of potential flight cancellations and travel disruptions.
It added that “Iranian-supported Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia,” noting that “this military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly.”
“Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region. Those who do travel to or from the region should monitor information about airport and airline operations,” the statement said warning that US diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. “Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world, including US businesses and other institutions.”
US President Donald Trump cut short a weekend at Camp David, a secluded presidential complex in rural Maryland, to return unexpectedly to the White House on Saturday.
The White House gave no explanation for the early return.
