Politico reports that Zelenskyy’s weekend visit to Serbia caused political tensions across the Balkans. During his first meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would continue not to recognize Kosovo’s independence. That angered Kosovo, which quickly removed a large “Free Ukraine” banner from central Pristina, saying solidarity must be mutual.
The visit also intensified regional disputes. Vucic threatened action over Kosovo’s demolition of Serb-owned houses near a reservoir, while Serbian and Albanian officials exchanged sharp public comments online. The Kosovo issue remains highly sensitive because of its history, its partial international recognition, and the way Russia has used it to justify its own territorial aggression.
Zelenskyy’s position was likely driven by military necessity. Serbia still produces Soviet-caliber ammunition that Ukraine needs for older weapons systems, and Vucic has reportedly been willing to supply it quietly. Analysts also say Vucic may be using closer ties with Zelenskyy to ease EU criticism of Serbia’s democratic decline and domestic unrest.
