(Kahfi Hafiz – East Asia Forum) Revisions to Indonesia’s General Election Law appear to be stalling as several issues remain politically contested following Constitutional Court decisions. Changes to parliamentary threshold rules, campaign finance and the use of state resources, as well as electoral management body reform, all create clear winners and losers, making consensus difficult. Delaying reform may help the incumbent coalition to avoid potentially divisive negotiations, but Indonesia cannot afford prolonged political deadlock among elites. What it needs is a clear pathway to revising the electoral law built on a transparent and inclusive process, as well as the political will to safeguard fair electoral competition.
