Riots broke out across major French cities on Saturday night as unrest spread beyond the capital, with government buildings torched and more than 1,000 people detained by police.
In the central city of Limoges, the historic town hall was set ablaze, with video showing its roof collapsing. In Marseille, black-clad protesters broke into city hall and defaced the building, and in Lyon, protesters torched the city’s tourist office, the Reuters news agency reported.
As night fell in Paris, groups of young people looted and started fires as protests ended, prompting police to respond with tear gas and baton charges in the narrow streets.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 1,200 people had been detained nationwide in the unrest, and condemned the “unacceptable levels of violence.”
