For many years, people hoped the internet would become the ultimate communications platform, freeing people from barriers imposed by cost and geography and truly enabling anyone anywhere to engage with others. In this utopian vision, online speech could be truly “free” (especially if people could maintain anonymity), and the internet could become a positive force for alternative views that might not get attention from conventional media.
