In December 2020, Congress enacted the No Surprises Act, which will eliminate most surprise out-of-network bills effective January 1, 2022. The law bars health care providers from billing patients for more than their usual in-network cost-sharing in the most common surprise out-of-network billing situations, and it creates a final offer arbitration system to resolve payment disputes between health insurers and health care providers related to care provided in these situations.
