The fiery pursuit of development in the Pacific

(Meg Keen – East Asia Forum) Despite a rocky 2025, the Pacific islands are entering 2026 with a more assertive posture. The region is pushing ahead on climate justice and self-determination, insisting that development and security partnerships respect sovereignty and align with the region’s priorities. At the same time, shifting donor priorities, militarisation and unresolved colonial legacies are testing process and unity. In 2026, the Pacific will welcome partners, but on Pacific terms.
