Presidents of Taiwan are rarely well known in the international community. Lee Tung-hui was an exception. As the president of Taiwan from 1988 to 2000, his efforts to promote Taiwan’s democratisation earned him the nickname, ‘Taiwan’s Father of Democracy’. But what made Lee famous was how he revamped the dynamics of the trilateral relationship between the United States, Taiwan and China.
