Sadr Renews Boycott of Iraq’s political Process: A Strategic Stance or Tactical Maneuver? (Emirates Policy Center)

(Emirates Policy Center) After months of signaling potential re-engagement in Iraqi politics – particularly ahead of the upcoming elections – Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the Sadrist Movement (SM), has announced his renewed intention to boycott the country’s political process. This stance appears closely linked to recent regional and international developments. Internal factors influenced Sadr’s decision to renew his boycott of the political process. Most notable was the refusal of parliamentary blocks to approve an electoral law which the Sadrists consider fairer than others, and under which they won the 2021 elections. While it remains possible that Sadr could reverse his boycott decision or adopt a more confrontational approach with the political class, his position will have immediate repercussions. If the status quo persists, the boycott could benefit the Coordination Framework (CF) forces in the elections.
