Senior officials in Fatah claim that Hussein al-Sheikh lost his status as a possible successor to 87-year-old Mahmoud Abbas following the release of a tape in which he is heard defaming and cursing Abbas, the chairman of the PA. Israel and the United States are very concerned about a succession battle that could lead to violent clashes in the West Bank and the victory of Hamas in the elections.
