Japan. Suga’s premiership: a short-lived but packed administration (Robert Ward, IISS)

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide announced on 3 September that he would not seek re-election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the month-end contest, in effect signalling his resignation as premier. Once elected, among the LDP’s new leader’s first decisions will be the timing of the next lower-house election, which must be held by late November. The short time between a new leader taking office and having to lead the party into a general election is unprecedented in Japan’s recent political history.
