Indian Police Arrest Cybercrime Gang Copycats of Myanmar Biz Model (Robert Lemos – Dark Reading)

Police in the southeastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh questioned more than 100 people and arrested 33 suspects as part of a crackdown on cybercriminal enterprises modeled on the syndicates common in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. The group had operated from a handful of buildings in the Atchutapuram special economic zone and industrial area, hiring young English-speaking citizens from northern provinces to reportedly work at defrauding people in the US, Australia, and the UK. For two years, the cybercriminals ran a fake call center, posing as members of Amazon’s customer support, with different groups within the enterprise taking on different roles.
