China – The reality of China’s fertility decline (Zhongwei Zhao, Guangyu Zhang, East Asia Forum)

The relaxation of China’s one-child policy in 2013, and its termination in 2015, generated only a moderate and temporary fertility increase. China’s total fertility rate further declined from 1.6 live births per woman in 2017 to 1.3 in 2020. Because of this change, China’s annual population growth rate dropped to a new low of less than 0.3 per cent in 2020.
