Until late July 2021, China was the global leader in online education and after-school tutoring, spearheaded by US exchange-listed companies such as TAL Education and New Oriental Education. Beijing’s sudden decision to outlaw the business model of online tutoring, accusing the sector of promoting ‘social inequality’, has essentially wiped out this thriving sector.
