The trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States (AUKUS), announced on 15 September 2021, has instantly become a matter of interest, and controversy, in the Indo-Pacific, the region that is unfolding as a theatre for 21st century’s geopolitical affairs. Touted as Canberra’s biggest defence partnership in decades, the trilateral aims to strengthen the security arrangement in the Indo-Pacific along with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or the Quad. This was made clear in their joint statement, which described the pact as a “historic opportunity for the three nations, with like-minded allies and partners, to protect shared values and promote security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.”
