India
- August 11, 2022. Sanjeev S. Ahluwalia, ORF. The annual address from the ramparts of the Red Fort is Prime Minister Modi’s prime vehicle for mass outreach, other than via his Twitter handle. His style—discursive, evocative, and expansive—suits the occasion where substance needs to take a back seat to rhetoric. Independence Day 2022: Looking ahead
- August 11, 2022. Rishi Kant, Himanshu Khushwaha, ORF. India is experiencing a surge in power demand owing to an expanding economy. Even as the country has embraced the idea of transitioning to clean renewable energy, its current demand for electricity can only be met by addressing the concerns surrounding coal-fired power plants. The goal of going green might be a medium- to long-term strategy that should be diligently pursued to avoid future crises. In the short term, however, focus should be on making coal-based plants work efficiently; power plants working on imported coal in India are crucial in this regard. This brief analyses the problems hindering the optimum operation of power plants working on imported coal. Promoting Efficiency in Power Generation in India: The Role of Imported-Coal-Based Plants

Taiwan
- August 10, 2022. Oriana Skylar Mastro, The Economist, AEI. In the afternoon of August 4th, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) kicked off the largest and most sophisticated military exercises it has ever conducted. Over the course of a week, the Chinese launched dozens of missiles and conducted drills near Taiwan with 100 aircraft, ten destroyers and support vessels. Submarines and aircraft-carriers also played a role. The display has made the third Taiwan Strait crisis, which occurred between 1995-96, when China conducted four rounds of tests over the course of several months, with barrages of no more than six missiles, look like child’s play. China’s huge exercises around Taiwan were a rehearsal, not a signal, says Oriana Skylar Mastro

- August 10, 2022. Desmond Lachman, AEI. Today’s encouraging consumer price numbers suggest that inflation has very likely peaked and will continue to come down in a sustained manner. However, they also suggest that progress on the inflation front all too likely will come at the expense of a hard economic landing. This is not least because of considerable economic weakness abroad and because in its quest to regain control over inflation the Fed likely will keep raising interest rates by 75 basis points even as the economy is weakening. The Federal Reserve’s All-Out War on Inflation Could Backfire

The Indo-Pacific, stretching from the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to the central Pacific Ocean, is home to a large diversity of marine resources and ecosystems and plays a significant role in regional and global trade networks. Two states which look to capitalize on such cooperation are India and Japan. Both states are positioned as complementary powers due to the nature of their development and current needs. The two states are strategically aligned in the Indo-Pacific and have thus expanded their bilateral defence ties and cooperation in multilateral organizations like the QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue). To understand the current scope and potential of cooperation between India and Japan it is necessary to look at seven areas of convergence between them.
