Agentic warfare, a military model in which autonomous and semi-autonomous systems are deployed to facilitate or drive planning, logistics, operations, and intelligence, is set to disrupt long-established doctrines and staff organization. The deployment of agentic capabilities has become an important frontier in the techno-military competition between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), with both countries making significant investments. Both the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Hamas-Israel war, are demonstrating what semi-autonomous systems and tools may look like in practice and how they might evolve in the future. Critical voices warn of cyclical hype about emerging technologies in warfare and narratives portraying agentic warfare as a panacea, while proponents focus on structural and organizational obstacles to development and deployment.
