Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies risk reproducing and amplifying racial discrimination, United Nations experts warned during a discussion at the General Assembly’s Third Committee on 2 November 2026. They called for firmer measures to address discriminatory effects in digital environments and ensure that technology governance is grounded in international human rights law. Ashwini K.P., the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, said that although technology has transformed societies, the structural inequalities addressed by the 2001 Durban Declaration and Programme of Action persist and are increasingly reproduced and amplified in digital environments.
