Il talento transatlantico / The transatlantic talent

(English version)

As we have been writing, the American midterms deliver a clear message both domestically and internationally. Historically consolidated, the transatlantic relationship between Europe and the United States must be strategically revived at a historical moment in which both shores of the Atlantic are crossed by upheavals of great impact.

As in every political event, the reasons that led to the ‘blue wave’ in the United States are many and deeply interrelated. There is a complexity in social and institutional systems that cannot be sacrificed on the altar of simplification. America, many say, will probably rediscover a systemic equilibrium, preparing for the real confrontation that will take place in 2028.

The transatlantic relationship must rediscover its strategic inevitability. We cannot betray history, but it must be lived in the ‘spirit of the times’, studying the evolution of the nature of power and its dynamics. In a passage of eras such as the current one, a metamorphosis of the world, some pillars remain unchanged and continue to constitute the architrave of international relations: the transatlantic relationship is one of them. Despite their mutual differences, but together within the great challenges of the present historical moment, Europe and the United States are destined to be protagonists of the planetary framework that will come — certainly different from the one we knew, but which must be imprinted with freedom, justice and security.

We will have occasion to reason about the challenges that mark, determine and traverse history. Certainly, the American people have expressed themselves clearly, saying — through the vote cast in the midterms — that it is necessary to return to more regular tracks in a multilateral context. But we cannot, from both shores of the Atlantic, lull ourselves with the certainties of the past. Mediation and vision are needed to restore to the transatlantic approach its talent, steeped in the future already present. We must understand history in order to try to govern it, opening the doors to innovation, first and foremost of and in thought: if the world has been dismantled, a greater equilibrium between Europe and the United States is one of the decisive elements in attempting to restore to it a truly sustainable architecture.
