WTO publishes study on stablecoins’ role in international trade

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat published a new report on 14 September examining how stablecoins could support cross-border trade, as part of the organisation’s first World Trade and Tech Day. The study explores their potential to make international payments faster, cheaper and more transparent, while examining how they could support greater participation in international trade.

Stablecoins are increasingly being used for payments, remittances and business-to-business transactions, although their role in international trade remains relatively limited. The report identifies faster settlement and lower transaction costs as potential benefits, while noting that stablecoins are primarily used as payment and settlement tools rather than substitutes for trade finance, which provides credit, guarantees and risk mitigation.
