Iraq PM Ali al-Zaidi rules out second term, vows to press ahead with anti-corruption drive

(Al Arabiya) Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi said on Friday that he would not seek a second term in office, while pledging to continue efforts to combat corruption and bring all weapons under state control.

Speaking at the opening of the eighth Baghdad Dialogue Conference, al-Zaidi said all political forces were in full agreement on the need to restrict weapons to the state.

He added that work was underway on mechanisms for handing over weapons and fully ending the presence of arms outside state control.

Al-Zaidi also sought to ease concerns over possible internal confrontation, saying there were no intentions or indications of any military clash.

“We will not allow Iraq’s enemies to exploit any opportunity,” he said.
