Russian officials have seized on recent US efforts to advocate for, identify, and repatriate deported Ukrainian children to downplay the massive scale and systematic nature of Russia’s deportation campaign and to advance Kremlin efforts to restore bilateral US-Russia relations. Russia’s own accounting of its treatment of deported Ukrainian children, however, undermines the Kremlin campaign to use children as a negotiating tool and highlights the true magnitude of Russia’s crimes.
