Amiamo la cultura dei popoli. Nel tempo che viviamo, dove il caos non creativo e la mediocrità politica regnano sovrane, val bene fare distinzioni fondamentali: il destino dei popoli non può essere sovrapposto a quello dei governanti pro-tempore.
Il popolo ebraico, quello che vive in Israele e altrove in giro per il mondo, è erede di una grande cultura e merita, come ogni popolo, totale rispetto. Lo scriviamo con forza perché siamo contro ogni forma di anti-Semitismo, da parte di chiunque e comunque si sviluppi. Diciamo anche che se l’anti-semitismo è un fenomeno antico, le scelte del governo israeliano su Gaza e sulla Cisgiordania avranno come effetto, tra gli altri, di radicalizzare l’odio, di renderlo permanente. Questo, sia per il popolo palestinese che per quello ebraico, è inaccettabile e insostenibile.
Proprio perché sistema democratico, in Israele si pratica il dissenso. Il problema che vediamo, come fenomeno che va pericolosamente consolidandosi, è il sommarsi degli spiriti animali in un quadro di bullismo geopolitico che lascia ben poco spazio alla mediazione, cercando fragili compromessi, e al dialogo. Il dissenso, ovunque esista, è alimento della democrazia perché aiuta un sistema istituzionale a crescere e a incontrare il destino dei popoli governati.
Il caso di Israele, con tutte le tragicità legate al terrorismo di Hamas, agli ostaggi ancora in sua mano e al dramma della crisi umanitaria che il popolo palestinese vive in crescendo, ci mostra l’auto-inganno della ricerca di un assoluto securitario che può avvenire solo attraverso la pratica della disumanità: assoluto che, peraltro, non può mai essere raggiunto.
Altresì, sia il popolo israeliano che quello palestinese saranno le vittime di una politica che alza progressivamente la barra della violenza per la violenza: non si intravvedono visioni e e strategie ma solo tattiche che persino i militari criticano.
Distinguere è fondamentale perché la complessità dei popoli non può essere sacrificata sull’altare del bullismo (talvolta in nome di un Dio malato) praticato dai governi.

We love the culture of peoples. In the times we live in, where non-creative chaos and political mediocrity reign supreme, it is worth making fundamental distinctions: the destiny of peoples cannot be superimposed on that of their pro-tempore governments.
The Jewish people, those who live in Israel and elsewhere around the world, are heirs to a great culture and deserve, like every people, total respect. We write this emphatically because we are against all forms of anti-Semitism, whoever it comes from and however it develops. We also say that while anti-Semitism is an ancient phenomenon, the Israeli government’s decisions on Gaza and the West Bank will have the effect, among other things, of radicalising hatred and making it permanent. This is unacceptable and unsustainable, both for the Palestinian and the Jewish people.
Precisely because it is a democratic system, dissent is practised in Israel. The problem we see, as a phenomenon that is becoming dangerously entrenched, is the accumulation of animal spirits in a context of geopolitical bullying that leaves little room for mediation, practising fragile compromises, and dialogue. Dissent, wherever it exists, is the lifeblood of democracy because it helps an institutional system to grow and meet the destiny of the peoples it governs.
The case of Israel, with all the tragedy linked to Hamas terrorism, the hostages still in its hands and the growing humanitarian crisis facing the Palestinian people, shows us the self-deception of seeking absolute security, which can only be achieved through inhumanity: an absolute that, moreover, can never be achieved.
Furthermore, both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples will be the victims of a policy that progressively raises the bar of violence for violence: there are no visions or strategies in sight, only tactics that even the military criticises.
It is essential to distinguish because the complexity of peoples cannot be sacrificed on the altar of bullying (sometimes in the name of a sick God) practised by governments.
