La ricerca della sicurezza assoluta, a ogni costo, può avvenire soltanto attraverso la guerra e la distruzione. Se il 7 ottobre resterà una data spartiacque nella storia d’Israele, ciò che accade a Gaza è solo disumanità.
Guerra e distruzione sono pratiche di vendetta. Tutti dobbiamo sottolineare, con forza e convinzione, il diritto all’esistenza e alla sicurezza dello Stato d’Israele: oggi però, a voler essere onestamente realisti, siamo in un’altra storia. Oggi ci troviamo di fronte a un Paese, peraltro molto diviso al suo interno, che cerca ossessivamente una sicurezza assoluta che è un orizzonte mai possibile concretamente, storicamente.
L’ossessione della sicurezza assoluta prevede unicamente nemici. E tutti lo sono, salvo coloro che sposano a-criticamente la linea di una ‘occupazione totale’. Noi stiamo molto attenti a usare parole sensibili che richiamano altre esperienze storiche ma dobbiamo notare che è stata superata la giustificazione della lotta al terrorismo. Siamo nel pieno della vendetta e, come intellettuali, dovremmo domandarci: cosa accadrà dopo ? quali condizioni si stanno preparando per il futuro delle popolazioni palestinese e israeliana e del Medio Oriente ?
Crescerà l’odio, è inevitabile. Le divisioni aumenteranno e le possibilità di mediazione e di dialogo diventeranno sempre più fragili. Ancora una volta richiamiamo la politica e la diplomazia, sostanzialmente assenti in questa fase storica di grande (e tragica) trasformazione. Per meglio dire, c’è una presenza: ed è quella dello scontro tra opposte propagande. Mentre Israele rischia il suicidio, i palestinesi vivono la progressiva cancellazione: se per alcuni non siamo a un punto di svolta, per noi è venuto il tempo di guardare in faccia la realtà.

The pursuit of absolute security, at any cost, can only be achieved through war and destruction. If 7 October remains a watershed moment in Israel’s history, what is happening in Gaza is nothing short of inhumanity.
War and destruction are acts of revenge. We must all emphasise, with strength and conviction, the right of the State of Israel to exist and to be secure: today, however, if we are to be honest and realistic, we are in a different situation. Today we are faced with a country, which is also deeply divided internally, that is obsessively seeking absolute security, which is a goal that has never been and never will be achievable in practical terms, historically speaking.
The obsession with absolute security only sees enemies. And everyone is an enemy, except those who uncritically espouse the line of “total occupation”. We are very careful to use sensitive words that recall other historical experiences, but we must note that the justification for the fight against terrorism has been overcome. We are in the midst of revenge and, as intellectuals, we should ask ourselves: what will happen next? What conditions are being prepared for the future of the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, and the Middle East ?
Hatred will grow, that is inevitable. Divisions will increase and the possibilities for mediation and dialogue will become increasingly fragile. Once again, we call on politics and diplomacy, which are essentially absent at this historic moment of great (and tragic) transformation. To be more precise, there is a presence: that of the clash between opposing propaganda. While Israel risks suicide, the Palestinians are experiencing progressive erasure: if for some we are not at a turning point, for us the time has come to face reality.
