European Commission plans AI cybersecurity response

The European Commission is reportedly preparing to use AI to accelerate its response to serious cyberattacks, as its internal IT department considers automated protective measures for specific high-risk scenarios. An independent report on the Commission’s plans to use AI to respond faster to cyberattacks says the initiative is being developed by DG DIGIT, the EU executive’s in-house IT department.

According to the internal document obtained by POLITICO, the Commission sees faster containment as particularly important in high-risk incidents, where detecting an attack may not be enough if defensive action cannot be taken quickly. The proposed approach would introduce automated protective measures while retaining human oversight and controls rather than allowing unrestricted automation.
