The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reclaimed the presidential palace and government headquarters in Khartoum last week from the control of the opposition paramilitary RSF. The conflict in Sudan has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with millions displaced, famine conditions present, and the perpetration of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, including ethnic cleansing and sexual and gender-based violence against women and children. Despite recent SAF advances, the RSF still controls large parts of Sudan and is attempting to position itself as a legitimate entity in any post-conflict arrangement. Foreign actors have leveraged the war in Sudan to expand their regional influence, increasing the risk of a protracted conflict and spillover into countries with instability, including in South Sudan and Chad.
